Exploring Charlottesville
Charlottesville is located within the confines of Albemarle County in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is home to the University of Virginia. The city is named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the queen consort of King George III. Charlottesville is rich with history, but it is best known as home to three U.S. Presidents: Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe.

Nestled in the foothills of the legendary Blue Ridge Mountains, the area is famous for the year-round natural beauty of nearby Shenandoah National Park and the scenic Skyline Drive. In 2004, Charlottesville was ranked by Cities Ranked and Rated as the best place to live in the United States.

Downtown Charlottesville, Virginia

The Boar's Head Inn, the location for the conference, boasts a par-72 championship course called the Birdwood Golf Course. At Birdwood, the front nine offers clear views to fairway landing areas and wide-open approaches to greens, whereas the back nine meanders over rolling terrain, often adjacent to dense woods. The course received the prestigious 4 ˝-star ranking among the "Best Places to Play" in the 2008/09 edition of Golf Digest.

Public 18-hole courses in the area include the municipal Meadow Creek Golf Course At Pen Park, the Lake Monticello Golf Course, and The Rivanna Resort and Golf Club.

Monticello is the house designed and built by Thomas Jefferson for himself and his family. It is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson, being redesigned and rebuilt for more than forty years. An image of the west front of Monticello was featured on the reverse of the 5 cent coin of the United States of America coined from 1938 to 2003, and on the reverse of the United States of America two dollar bill that was printed from 1928 to 1966.

In addition to the Main House, the gardens at Monticello were a botanic showpiece, a source of food, and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world. Also, the Monticello plantation of 5,000 acres was a center of agriculture and industry, and was home not only to the Jefferson family, but to workers, black and white, enslaved and free. Jefferson’s gravesite is located here as well. Jefferson is buried along with members of his family and their descendants. His grave is marked by an obelisk inscribed with his own epitaph.
